Dear Centerra Mirage Community,

It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year at Centerra Mirage STEM Academy.  As I reflect on the past year, there are many things to be proud of and many accomplishments to celebrate.  Centerra Mirage installed a state-of-the-art Paxton Patterson STEM lab in the fall of last year. Our robotics teams won state titles and made their second consecutive appearance at the VEX IQ World Competition.  Centerra Mirage has been the only school site to host the Arizona STEM Community of Practice event where more than 300+ educators, students, business partners and community members came together to share best practices and learn about STEM education.  We have also experienced academic growth, celebrating an overall increase in both Math and English Language Arts on the AZMerit test.  These are just a few of the tremendous things that took place this past year.  We could not have accomplished them without the support from each of you, our parents, students and community members.  Thank you!

As I look forward, I am excited about what is to come.  We have been preparing to implement a new behavior system for the 2017-2018 school year.  We will be implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).  This system focuses on three core values identified by our staff.  Those values are as follows: “Be Respectful,”  “Be Responsible” and “Be A Problem Solver.”  Behavior expectations have been developed for each core value and will be explicitly taught to students.  Students are then acknowledged for their positive behavior and choices.  Research shows that following the PBIS model will allow us to recover many hours of instructional time translating into an increase in student learning!

I am also excited to share that Centerra Mirage STEM Academy continues to focus on becoming a front-runner in STEM education.  We are committed to exposing all students, Kindergarten through 8th grade, to STEM curriculum.  As a part of that commitment, we will be the only school in our district to offer STEM classes daily to all grade levels as a special area class.  Our 6th through 8th grade students will be working in the Paxton Patterson STEM lab on learning modules which include audio communication, computer graphics and animation, digital manufacturing, digital music, environment and ecology, flight technology, information technology, laser technology and video production.  Our younger students will participate in twenty articulated units that focus on research, development and marketing, powerful possibilities with electricity and energy conservation, elementary engineering and engineering principals, and transportation and design.  We believe that STEM education will increase our student’s ability to become thinkers, problem solvers, and communicators now and in the future!

In closing, I invite each of you to visit our campus, become involved in your student’s education, and witness the amazing things that are taking place on our campus.  Thank you again for your continued support.  We look forward to partnering with you for another successful year at Centerra Mirage STEM Academy!
