Mrs. Barbara Burnett

Welcome to 5th grade!  It is my pleasure to be your Math and Science teacher this year.

In math, we will review, learn, and discuss:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • Write and interpret numerical expressions.
  • Analyze patterns and relationships.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • Understand the place value system.
  • Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

Number and Operations—Fractions (NF)

  • Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system.
  • Represent and interpret data.
  • Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition.

Geometry (G)

  • Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
  • Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.

Math class is centered around a hands-on approach.  We will  use white boards, manipulatives, i-pads, and visual powerpoints to explain and understand math concepts.

Memorizing multiplication tables will be a huge focus the first part of the year.  Please help your child review and practice their multiplication facts.  This skill will help them with multiplying and dividing whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
I am looking forward working with and getting to know your child's learning style and interests.  If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me either by email or phone.  I will return your call as soon as possible.
